A ScratchJr Alternative for Kids Who Can't Read Yet

A search for a ScratchJr alternative usually starts from a surprise, so it is worth saying first: ScratchJr does not have a reading problem to fix. Its blocks are pictures. A five-year-old who cannot read a word can still snap a blue arrow block onto a character and watch it walk.

ScratchJr deserves that credit. It is free. It was built by the DevTech Research Group (then at Tufts, now at Boston College), the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab and the Playful Invention Company, launched in 2014 and designed for ages 5–7 on purpose, from research into how young children think. A kid who is busy in it at five or six is getting exactly what it was designed to give.

So the honest question is what, exactly, a family wants replaced. It is usually one of three things.

The idea is bigger than the blocks

ScratchJr's characters can move, jump, dance and sing, and a child can paint them, record a voice, and drop in a photo. That is a lot for a five-year-old to play with — and it is also the ceiling.

The idea a five-year-old describes at the dinner table is usually not "the cat walks right and says hello". It is a dragon that chases you and you lose if it catches you, or a race between a snail and a rocket where the snail wins, or a birthday card for Grandma where the candles go out one by one when you tap them. Some of that can be approximated with the blocks. Most of it cannot, and the child knows.

Wonderkit builds from the description itself. The kid says the dragon game; AI agents build a dragon game; the kid plays it and asks for the dragon to be faster, or scarier, or to breathe fire. The ceiling is set by what they can imagine and describe, not by the palette.

Assembling is the part they bounce off

For some kids the sequencing is the fun. Working out that the jump block has to come before the sound block, and that you need a repeat around both, is the whole point — and that is precisely what ScratchJr was built to teach. If your kid lights up there, keep them there.

Other kids have the idea fully formed and treat the blocks as an obstacle between them and it. They narrate; the tool wants them to sequence. At five that often looks like a kid who hands the tablet back after two blocks and goes off to draw the dragon instead. The device is not a tablet

ScratchJr is made for tablets — iPad and Android, with Chromebooks and some laptops able to run it with limits. Wonderkit is an iOS app and a website, so it runs on an iPhone at the kitchen table or in a browser on whatever laptop is already open.

What a pre-reader actually does in Wonderkit

This part is easy to oversell, so here is how it actually goes. The conversation with the AI is in words. A five-year-old who cannot read does not use it alone.

What works at this age is the kid talking and a grown-up beside them. The kid says what they want and the grown-up types it — or, in the web chat, taps the microphone and lets the kid say it out loud (it works in browsers with voice input, such as Chrome and Safari). The build runs, the kid plays it, and the grown-up asks the only question that matters: what should be different? In the iOS app, the AI's replies can be read aloud, so the kid hears what it is asking back. A grown-up can also join any build to help.

By six or seven, some kids read enough of the AI's short replies to carry more of it themselves, and the grown-up's job shrinks to typing what they say. But at five, plan on sitting together. ScratchJr is better for a kid who wants to play on their own — better to know that before you try than after.

What Wonderkit does not do

Wonderkit does not teach sequencing. Nothing in it shows a kid that instructions run in order, or what a repeat is for — that lesson belongs to ScratchJr, which was built for it, and it is a real lesson to be missing.

What a Wonderkit kid gets instead is the designer's seat — deciding what the dragon does, noticing when the built game is not the one they pictured, and finding the words to fix it. That is a different skill from sequencing rather than a substitute for it, and it is one a kid can practise at five.

Is Wonderkit better than ScratchJr?

They do different jobs, so the question has no winner. ScratchJr, free and built by child-development researchers for exactly this age, teaches a kid to put instructions in order with picture blocks. Wonderkit takes the idea the kid already has and builds it from their words. The right one depends on whether your kid enjoys the blocks or keeps trying to talk their way past them.

My 5-year-old can't read. Can they actually use Wonderkit?

Yes, and it is a sensible pairing. ScratchJr for the days your kid wants to build something with their own hands, block by block. Wonderkit for the days the idea is a dragon that chases you and a score in the corner, and the blocks would take an hour to get halfway there.

Is ScratchJr really free?

Yes. The official site describes it as a free app for iPads, Android tablets and Chromebooks, and projects are saved on the device itself. The researchers who maintain it ask families who enjoy it to consider a donation.
